Description

Getting away from Rome towards the North and leaving aside the shores of the Thyrrenian Sea, you will arrive at the medieval borough of Ceri, a tiny village settled on a tufaceous spur of volcanic origin. A crown of embattled walls embraces its ancient houses facing the tiny central square, tightened around both the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary and the austere Palace of the noble family Torlonia. A context of remarkable archeologic, historic and naturalistic interest forms the background of this charming agricultural settlement, creating altogether a picture of rare beauty. We find ourselves in the greatest archeologic area of Europe, namely the home of the Etruscan people.

THE HOUSES
The "Great House": The residence of the householder is situated in an ancient building, together with two other independent lodgings: the house of the "Facocchio" and that of the "Vergaro".
The architecture of this construction is clearly marked by the signs of the historic periods that have left a pronounced impact on the borough of Ceri : the Etruscans, the Romans, the Middle Ages and the era of the Renaissance with its palaces of the nobility, the nineteenth century , they all together left the traces of their permanence in the borough.
The owner’s house and both lodgings arranged as "bed and breakfast" have their own independent access from the small central square of Ceri, surrounded by a few ancient constructions , in particular the Church of the Virgin Immaculate (eleventh century) and the Palace of the family Torlonia (fifteenth - seventeenth century).
The opposite side of the building faces an enclosed Mediterranean garden, looking down on the valley outside the retaining walls. The garden strikes by its simplicity: citrus fruits, olive trees, prickley pears, laurel, holm oaks and cypresses.
The light, the colours and the general atmosphere remind the guests that they are at the far edge of the region Maremma, only at short distance from the seaside. A pergola of wisteria is climbing up against the rear of the house, next to the brazier for the summer meals in the open air. In the garden you will also find the personal office of the houselord, the vegetable garden of the family and the wine cellar, home of the locally produced wine.
All internal rooms reflect the ancient charms of the borough: original fittings and fire places, ceilings sustained by old wooden joists and brick floors.
The home of the Facocchio: This is one of the most particular houses of Ceri, caved from the rooms of the ancient workshop of the "Facocchio", the artisan of the farming community charged with the construction and repair of the wooden tools and vehicles.
The house of the "Facocchio" situated next to the owner’s dwelling and the home of the "Vergaro" has its own independent entrance from the central square and looks upon the enclosed garden. It is spread over two floors: the ground floor with its spacious dining and sitting room with a fireplace and a completely outfitted kitchen, the bathroom and a dispensary with refrigerator.; the upper floor with a very spacious place, divided in two separated bedrooms. The house offers an easy access to the garden and the internal private car parking.
The home of the Vergaro: This independent apartment, situated in between the home of the "Facocchio" and the owner’s house, is the ancient residence of the Vergaro, the shepherd who produced the typical cheese made of ewe’s milk. Even this house has an independent access from the central square with view on the garden and is spread over three floors, provided with a proper lift and internal staircase that lead to the two bedrooms and the two bathrooms, to the dining and sitting-room with fireplaces and to the completely outfitted kitchen, with access to the charming Mediterranean garden.
Ceri is to be considered as an ideal starting point for noteworthy itineraries, starting from the castles along the seaside of Palo and Santa Severa, ending up at the fortress of Michelangelo and the harbour of Civitavecchia; from the Etruscan necropolis of Cerveteri to the thermal springs; from the naturalistic oasis of Palo and the mountains of Tolfa to the hot springs of Manziana; from the Thyrrenian coasts to the shores of the volcanic lake of Bracciano with its tiny medieval cities cosely flanked on its crater. Its typical sceneries, its precious wines and its traditional cooking are all expressions of the Mediterranean flavours of the "Maremma Laziale". A fascinating and emotional journey in the immediate neighbourhood of the greater Rome and a few minutes away from the international airport of Fiumicino.
